Yes, in thirty eight states, the federal (civilian) law and the military. If you are going to commit murder, better do it in the north-east or northern midwest. Whatever you do, don't do it in the south. In Florida, there are stricter rules for euthanizing your pet dog than there are for executing criminals.

In each state the people vote for representatives who supposedly will enact laws in accordance with the will of the voters. Accordingly, in the majority of states the voters seem to have decided that capitol punishment is appropriate for certain crimes.

It's interesting to note that while anti-capital punishment activists claim that it doesn't reduce crime, crime in the more liberal states that do not have capital punishment tends to be higher.

I think it is the responsibility of the government to protect the people from criminals and predators. If that means that people need to be executed to prevent them or others from commiting heinious crimes then so be it. It serves the greater good.

Yes, most states as well as the federal government for federal capital crimes (like blowing up the Oklahoma City federal building). As has been pointed out, Texas leads in number of executions carried out. To quote Kelly Bundy, "It's as inevitable as death in Texas." Can't argue with logic like that.

Am sad to say that the US still kills people in the name of justice. It is third in the world in the number of killings, after China and the D R Of the Congo. In the US Texas leads all other states in killing people. Just put death penalty in you favorite search engine and you will find thousands. International Justice Project and Amnesty International have outstanding web pages.

Each state has its own laws on Capital Punishment. Nothing like eliminating the criminals permanently to lower the repeat offender list!
