Even without Merriman and Kaeding (who are both the leading Pro Bowl vote getters for their positions), this was a bad deal. Rivers not only has more physical talent (better arm, quicker release, more mobile), but he's already a better leader and makes better decisions with the football than Manning. Eli will never be more than a great quarterback's lesser brother/son.

The Chargers did the right thing; they dealt that whiner Eli Manning to NY (he is the second most hated football player here in San Diego next to Ryan Leaf).
Eli Manning isn't as good as Phil Rivers for the reasons that the other individuals posted above. Rivers is incredibly mobile, only throws the occasional INT, is an excellent leader, and he is (so far) exceeding all expectations. Prior to the season starting, I was really worried about him but now I have no qualms about Phil taking charge.
Picking up Merriman was a steal. This guy is a tank; he can break through almost any offensive line and drop the QB for multiple yardage loss. Hopefully, he learned a valuable lesson in keeping himself clean of steroids. And I also hope that this never happens again.
P.S. I agree with whatever Six String Samurai said before me. Give him the ten points.

I thought it was a terrible trade by New York. Because of the tantrums Eli made and threats by Archie Manning (an amazing 2 time Pro Bowler, that's right a whopping 2) I have lost all respect for both of them. Plus Eli isn't even as good as Rivers. So everyone on the New York side of it looks like an idiot.

It's early, but it helped San Diego a ton.
Now, Manning has started many more games, so that offsets the equation some.
Like most trades, this won't be settled for another 5-10 years. If Merriman roids out again, it will be closer to even...

All I have to say is that whoever makes the draft decisions for San Diego is a GENIOUS. They took Eli Manning knowing that he did not want to play for them and knowing that the NY Giants wanted him, so they took their #1 Pick and not only got a good (maybe great) quarterback, but got a Pro Bowl LB and a good Kicker.

i STILL don't know why people keep giving merriman a break. the guy does steroids so that's why he's so "good". why people still trust him, i don't know. demarcus ware was taken in the draft before merriman and i'd gladly take him on my team any day.
