I absolutley think it is, if people say cheerleading as a sport. I play the flute in Del Mar High School's Marching Band And Colorguard. My stupid pe teacher says i have to write a report on some sport, just cuz i strained a tendon and was out. Anyways i could really use your input.
Thanks,

I never considered marching band to be a sport when I marched (I played flute as well). Actually, I was kinda po'd about the whole deal because I had to give up volleyball for band once I got into high school. While I'm not a fan of cheerleaders, trust me, it takes a lot more athleticism to be one compared to a band member.

Marching band is not a sport. It is not a athletic pursuit - it is a musical one. Cheerleading is not so much a sport as performance - like dance sort of - in my opinion. They are all extra-curricular activities - but that simply means they are activities provided by the school that are outside the standard learning curriculum.

I, of course, would do a paper on a totally lame sport like bowling or that sport you play with the brooms in the olympics - curling? But then I was always a wise a** in school.

Peace!

PS - come on folks! Marching Band? It's a band not a team! It's a physical band that is true, but certainly less physical than Red Hot Chili Peppers or Madonna concert, right? You are musicians not athletes.

I'm sorry, but I played drums in marching and concert band, but I really don't believe it to be a sport. Of course, marching in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade was a bit of a workout. But calling it a sport, is a stretch. As far as the Dorksville comment, it takes brains, dedication, and years of hard work to master your instrument. I've been out of school for a long time, and I'm still learning things on the drums.

UMM I looked around and found that it's classed more as a sport of the arts

Ed Downs, the education director of the Harrisburg-based Tournament of Bands organization, said that marching bands are considered to be the "sport of the arts."
I don't know if that helps you or not

I think it is. You have to carry around your instrument as well as all of the heavy uniforms you have to wear. Not only do you have to play as you move, but you have to do it in all kind of weather. You're right, if people consider cheerleading a sport, then there's no reason that marching band shouldn't be considered a sport.

I think Drum Corps is closer to a sport than marching band, but neither one truly is a sport.

sorry but no, i know you guys put a ton of time into it, but it doesn't have anything to do with being fit, having strength, or physical contact. then again golf is a sport. I think a sport is something that people actually like to watch, not just parents. My highschools marching band is like 3rd in the nation, they have letterjackets, and everyone hates it. Thats just my opinion.

Sorry, but marching band isn't a sport. Cheerleading isn't either. It isn't a sport because you compete in competitions either. If it isn't included in the sports section of the news and lots of important, non-nerdy, people don't talk about it, then you're out of luck and need to go find a real sport to talk about.......like football!

A marching band is a sporting group of instrumental musicians who generally perform outdoors, and who incorporate movement – usually some type of marching – with their musical performance. Instrumentation typically includes brass, woodwinds, and percussion instruments and the music usually incorporates a strong rhythmic component suitable for marching.

In addition to traditional parade performances, many bands also perform field shows at special events (often American football games) or at marching band competitions. Marching bands are generally categorized by function and by the style of field show (if any) they perform. Increasingly, Marching Bands are performing indoor concerts, in addition to any "Pep Band" duties, that implement many of the songs, traditions, and flair from outside performances.

tennis is not a sport, it is ping pong while playing on the table

gymnastics is not a sport, there is no ball

darts is not a sport for the same reason

chess is not a sport, no risk of injury

bowling is not a sport, because there is no one stoping the ball from hitting the pins
