The main reason for the "death" has to be that Baseball stadiums are consistantly getting smaller to promote the "long-ball" which most fans pay to see. For instance the Polo Grounds in New York used to be almost 500 ft. in center field...hit it past the center fielder or to the gap and it doesn't not only go to the wall, but, IT KEEPS ROLLING! allowing the baserunner to easily get to third.

I would have to say the modern day power hitters park. The dissapearance of the "horseshoe" shaped baseball parks of the first fifty years of the 1900's was the main factor. In these parks the common dimensions were 250-275 feet down the line and around 500 feet to center field if a ball was hitten into the alley of right or left center field the hitter would be running for a long time.

There is not as many fast players because growing up they are taught to be more of a power hitter. The weight training is more a factor now than it has ever been. The parks have also become much smaller as a whole. The power alleys are like the measurements down the line used to be and the centerfield measurements is what the power alleys were.

X) The Braves pitching may be tremendous and the fielding is by no potential a lot of a difficulty. The hitting comes and is going. even as the Braves have the pitching and the hitting clicking mutually they're solid. They proved it even as they were in this seven interest triumphing streak that ended tonight with a loss to the Phillies.

Smaller stadiums,
more uniform fields--the Tigers had a flagpole in center field at tiger stadium!
Stronger -more fit players.
Pitchers are in for shorter periods,
and
lack of desire--too many over paid players worrying about getting hurt stretching a 2 bagger into a triple

ball parks have become slightly smaller with wals that allow the ball to karem off the wall easier., also more athletes with speed play the outfield as they have learned to play better defense.
the game has improved over the years as pitchers can throw more curves and splitters to prevent shots in the gap and power alleys.
The biggest factor in all of this is the player on defense has improved on how to cut the ball off from rolling to the wall.
You will also notice fewer amount of inside the park home runs as well

Many hitters have become power hitters, big, huge guys who just swing to hit homeruns..and aren't very fast b/c they either jog around the bases or trot back to the dugout. Pitchers, especially in the American League, have really gotten tougher, practicing pitching all the time and almost no hitting.

The parks are smaller and there are more homers hit. There aren't many guys that can fly and hit triples anymore, everyone now is into the longball.

Triples were considered extremely gay to many fans, so MLB decided to move 3rd base 10 ft. further away from 2nd base in the early 50's. The move worked as the queer triple became more of a freak occurance much to the delight of the fans.
