I know that it's a pot thing, but how did it begin? Why four twenty?

I'm pretty sure, but I may be wrong. I think was originally was the code police use to call in suspected marijuana possesion. "We've got a 420 in progress." Just like 123 is peeping tom or whatever. Not that I would know about that number...... : / I don't actually know what the code for peeping tom is. But pot smokers latched on to that number as a pride thing and then everything 420 became an excuse to smoke pot. Time of day and day in year blah blah.

The origin of the term "420" is the subject of some dispute and much speculation, and so no theory can be said conclusively to be correct, but the term seems to have first come into popular usage in the early 1970s.

Commonly accepted origin
Snopes.com, High Times magazine, The Marijuana-Logues, and The Straight Dope claim that in the early 1970s, a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California, used to meet every day after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke cannabis at the Louis Pasteur statue. One piece of evidence supporting an origin of the term from the time 4:20 is the fact that the number is always said "four twenty". This theory is also the most cited and the most widely accepted.[2]

April 20 is a day that is nationally recognized to rally to make marijuana legal. On 4/20 there are a lot of rallies on political levels to protest or march in support of legalization of marijuana use. The unfortunate thing is that a lot of the "high school" stoner types and of course the older "stoners" as well have made such a "party" of it that a lot of people tend to not take it as serious as it should be taken. In my opinion...I do believe that marijuana should be legal and alcohol should be illegal...simply because the ramifications of smoking seems to be far less disastrous than the effects of drinking alcohol. I do not smoke but am all for the legalization of marijuana!
