Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325 by the Aztecs (or Mexica as they called themselves). The Aztecs believed a prophecy that they would find the site for their new city where they would see an eagle, perched atop a cactus, eating a snake . The Aztecs saw this vision on what was then a small swampy island in Lake Texcoco. The vision that is now Mexico's coat of arms and on the Mexican flag.
