Don't confuse soft stools with diarrhea. Breast milk will cause softer stools, but that's okay and it's not diarrhea.

Any type of formula will be more likely to cause digestive problems for an infant. The stools of a breast fed baby are typically more loose than those of a formula fed baby, but that does not mean that the baby has diarrhea. Breast milk is the absolute best, nutritionally complete, and most easily digested food for a baby.

Diarrhea is watery and smelly.

Sometimes people are confused about the consistency of a breastfed babies stools. Breastfed babies usually have very loose, soft to runny and mushy stools. Early on, it usually looks like seedy mustard. This is totally normal. There will be no bad smell with it if they are exclusively breastfed.

ETA:
Dragon05Lady - Formula is NOT "Just as good." Even the formula companies put on their cans and advertisements "Breast is best." Formula is an acceptable alternative, nothing more, nothing less.

Soy formula

Soy formula. This is why the American Pediatrics Association recommends ONLY breastmilk for the first six months of life. (American parents seem to feed food to their babies WAY too early - and they are so proud it.) The child will develop a healthy immune system from mom as well as develop a healthier digestive system.

Formula. There is a change that it won't be made correctly or is at the wrong temperature, or just been left too long before using it and so has gone bad, none of which is a risk with fresh breastmilk.

Breast milk contains natural laxatives that will cause a baby to have running stools. This is a norm but their body will adjust. Soy formula is good for a baby and doctors recommend it when a baby has dirarreah because it contains NO MILK products in it. The lactose free kind It will not cause runny stools

I wouldnt keep the baby on it long term but if it was having diarreah lactose free soy formula may work

And please for the people who have posted going on and on about how breastmilk is best. Please do not make out that mothers who used formula are terrible. I did for my own personal reasons and yes breastmilk may be best but there are also studies out that say formula is just as good and babies will develop just fine on it

Definitely soy, it is harder for babies' digestive systems to break soy down. Thus is what causes spitting up and diarrhea.
