I mean really. This is getting ridiculous. Christmas has been about "stuff" now for decades. Isn't anybody else getting sick of this? Plus there's the stress of having to shop for people at Christmas, the expectations, and everything else. Why can't we just have all the rest of it without presents?

I think you can choose to do that on your own. Sure it would be easier if it was just no longer done, but don't let that stop you.

You might start by restricting the gifts you give within your family. Set a $ limit, or my personal preferance - require everything to be home-made. That doesn't have to mean lumpy scarves and other hideous items. It could be a vase filled with an unusual looking collection of twigs or some other natural thing like that.

I don't really think so. Because the holiday season is the end of november, to the end of december. That is the time for giving. Giving does include presents, I do believe that we should put a limit to the amount of presents recieved per child, however. But giving DOES meen sacrificing, and that is why we exchange presents, to show that we care about someone in a sacrficail way.

I think there really is a middle ground between a pound of hamburger and a silk flower arrangement when it comes to major-occasion gift giving. They definitely can be be more useful-that is I believe you are fully correct at how people view the idea of a gift at Christmas-some meaningless token which then qualifies as a special gift by being a "useless luxury."

I agree that some families get out of control with the gifts. I have a huge family and it would be ridiculous for everyone to buy for everyone else. We draw names for a gift exchange but make the cost limit for the gift like $15. It's so funny to see what stupid and cheesey gifts people come up with. It is fun to give and receive but we keep it cheap to remember what it's really about.

I'm not getting sick of it, but some things are a little out rageous!! Like what my friends' family does, they each give each other 3 gifts. One on the day before Christmas Eve, (like a smaller present, a c.d. or game for a computer or play station) then on Christmas Eve, the present gets a little bigger, (like item of clothing, or shoes, or accesories) then on Christmas the biggest one is revieled. Like the big one could be a gift card that's worth like $50. Or it could be like a car, or new computer, or new comforter, or something homemade. So, its like really fun.

I don't think we should abolish the tradition entirely, but I do agree that it can get beyond ridiculous and needs to be re-examined. It shouldn't be about the WHAT or COST of the gift, but the WHO and WHY. What's important is being together as a family.

If you don't like it, don't participate in it. But it is impossible on many levels to abolish the practice entirely. Anything that you ban will go underground. Look at history as an example. Lots of people though love giving gifts regardless of what you think of it.

Normally, I would agree with you. But, when you say 'stress', you must not realize that giving presents should be fun and a joy, not stressing. People think it's an obligation, but it shouldn't be. You should enjoy giving people presents! After all, wouldn't that make you happy?

You are not alone in thinking it's crazy.
For me now Christmas is Midnight Mass, dark and mystical and holy and being with remaining family. Buying presents for adults who can afford their own presents is too much - the presents are for the children.

You don't have to have presents, a simple family gathering would be fine. I can't afford gifts. Material things are the important.
