The narc in narcissistic is the same as the narc in narcotic.

Basically it means that you are drunk, or intoxicated, with your own appearance. A narcissus grows by a stream and has its head tilted toward the water, thus it is looking at itself in the reflection of the water.

In psychological terms, however, it means something totally different. A narcissistic person is one who lacks self esteem and thus most of his verbage is designed to impress a listener

It is called Personality disorder.

Quote:

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder in which a person is excessively preoccupied with personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity, mentally unable to see the destructive damage they are causing to themselves and others. It is a cluster B personality disorder.[1]

It is estimated that this condition affects one percent of the population, with rates greater for men. First formulated in 1968, NPD was historically called megalomania, and is a form of severe egocentrism.

Narcissus was a Greek youth who fell in love with his reflection in a stream. The gods felt sorry for him because he refused to leave his "love", and so they turned him into a flower of the same name. Narcissism and narcissistic refer to being in love with (or stuck on) oneself.
