"He's a friend of my mothers son" Is this wrong? Would this imply that he is my friend?
He isn't my friend but my mam's friend's son.
I don't know.

"Friend of my mother's son" means that he is either your friend (if you are a boy) or your brother's friend.

I think maybe you mean "He's the son of my mother's friend."

I don't know what is so difficult about this. It doesn't imply that he is your friend at all. He would be the son of your mother's friend.

You could be your mother's daughter so he might be a friend of your brother.
