It represents rebirth, renewal. Plus they smell good. Normally dead bodies don't smell so good. So there was a reason for lots of flowers at funerals in olden days. Perhaps the flowers at the funerals just kind of seeped over to flowers at graveside visits.

I think its more for ourselves than for the person whos grave you are putting them on.
