Get him something he wants. If he doesn't share, then what's he into? Go shopping with him and pay attention to what he looks at. That'll give you an idea if you don't already have one.
Personally...I love the clothes my gf buys me....I don't think I've ever returned anything...she always picks things I like but wouldn't pick out on my own.
If you're still stumped...get him tickets to something - sports/concert.

Sports related stuff. : Sports Ilustrated mag subscription, a jersey oh his favorite football team, etc.
Tools. Expensive ones.
Electronics, DVD and Cd's

Something engraved and a nice picture of you. That way, you are always there with him and he can read the inscription and remember what a great, loving wife you are.
