It all depends on how big you want your quilt - and then you can do the math! An 8 inch square with 1/4 inch seams will "net" you 7.5 inches of finished quilt. So 6 of them will give you 45 inches, 5 will give you 37.5 inches, 7 will give you 52.5 inches. Decide what you want for measurements, then multiply the "across" number of squares by the "down" number of squares to determine the total number of squares. For example, a 37.5 by 45 inch quilt is 5 by 6 squares, you need a total of 30 squares.

I don't quilt but I knit a lot. A traditional size of a lap-afghan is 36"x48". I couldn't imagine a lap quilt would be too far off from it.

It varies because of design requirements, but roughly 45 x 60.
