I am having some friends come in from out of town. We will be downtown for some of the day and in Livonia toward the evening. Where should I take them that isn't cheap but also not overly priced? Maybe Greektown?

Greektown has the most variety of choices in terms of restaurants in Detroit... Fishbones is my personal fave (most entrees range from $12-$20 not including drinks, dessert etc.) Other good places include Pegasus (authentic Greek food- saganaki- OPA!), and Pizza Papalis.

As for the Livonia area, there is a great Chinese restaurant called Hong Hua on Orchard Lake and 12 Mile, it's definitely not cheap and kind of fancy (you can get away with jeans and sweatshirts, but it's a white tablecloth-people wearing khakis type place). Awesome food, classy service. And the other recommedation around there would be the Riverwalk in downtown Novi- they have a Cheeseburger in Paradise, among other dining options... just google search it and you'll see the choices.

Well, coming from a small town just north of Detroit (although I'm currently living in Chicago), I think I can give you a good idea. It is a good place to live if you are looking for an adventure. Detroit is basically a ghost town on it's way to the ground. It's dangerous, dirty, run down, segregated, and although it's cheap, the crime rate is way up. You'd be better off going to Michigan State. Lansing is small and there's isn't tons to do, but it's nice enough. It'll be a change from Seattle. People are going to be much more focused on the Blue Collar way of living, might not be as open-minded as you think they might be, but pretty much all us Mid-Westerners are really friendly people. I'd check out some of the North Eastern colleges. A little bit more expensive, but a much more advanced society. Good luck!

Greektown is a great idea. There was an Ethiopian restaurant called The Blue Nile awhile back. Or how about Middle Eastern food? Try Dearborn's LaPita on Newman St.

Lucky Strike in Novi, has by far the best all a round entertainment spot in Michigan! There's a bar...food is good, a dance club, bowling, arcade games, many pool tables. It's only like a 15-20 min drive from the Livonia area, I had a blast when I was there!

Sweet Loraines or Toms Oyster bar are good choices. If you go to greektown, definitly go to Pizza Papilias they have the best deep dish pizza you will ever have. Also, make sure you go to Astoria Pastry shop or the Stone Cold Creamry for some sinful treats.

Greektown is good. Mexicantown is always a great choice. Slow's BBQ in corktown is a cool place, with great BBQ (call ahead or be prepared for a wait - but they have a ton of great beer on tap to please all palattes to keep you busy while waiting). Small Plates has great food, a little on the pricey side. Detroit Beer Company is right next door - good food, great beer.

Try Small Plates in Harmony Park. It is right off one of the People Mover stops and offers Tapas dining.

You can order a variety of dishes to share and they have full bar service.

After wards you can walk over to the Elwood or Hockey Town Cafe near the stadiums for a night cap.

You might even fool your friends into thinking Detroit has a nightlife (just kidding...kind of)!

Where ever you go don't go to the Grapevine in Greektown. Very ghetto service.
