Simply because it was a friendly, McClaren was using it as an opportunity to let others have a game when it doesnt matter on the outcome, and see if he can learn anything. As a Man U fan, I find it a difficult decision as to who I would use as they are both good players but in different ways Crouch, on his day, is deadly from close range and could well be the Gary Lineker type player that we so desperately miss since Shearer retired. However, Johnson is lightning quick and excellent at dragging apart gaps in the defence which could then be exploited by someone like Gerrard or Lennon. Its a tricky one really, and which striker plays alongside Rooney will depend on who is in the best form when the game comes, and also who can forge the best relationship with Rooney. At the moment i cant see Rooney being dropped as he is the only player really who can play behind the striker.

johnson is a very good player. being the top scoring English scorer in a team that got relegated is a fantastic achievment. and his goals for everton proves that he is class. he worked so hard against the Dutch but didnt get much reward cos he was played out of position in an unfamiliar position. Crouch wouldnt have done half as well in that position.
im not knocking crouch. he is a very good and different player. i like him but you cant say johnson isnt good cos he is great. he just needs to play more regularly.
btw, i am no everton supporter. i suport spurs with Liverpool as my second team

AJ is a class striker if used in the right position. Playing him wide as he did made as much sense as playing him in goal.

Playing him as a lone striker in front of Rooney would have had a far more devastating effect.

Crouch has shown his ability to score against poor opposition but has looked clueless every time he is against decent international opposition. It is a sign of how poor the English game is at the moment that a striker as one-dimensional as Crouch gets anywhere near the England team.
