Music is music. I believe the term "new age music" was fabricated by someone who wanted to say that their product wasn't like anything else.

To tell you what I think: Sarah McLachlan is "beautiful" music. And that is all it needs to be.

The woman can sing, and play the piano. She is "respectable" music.

New Age tends to be more spacy and free form (think Enya.) Sarah Mac has always been a solid pop songwriter. She has her more new-agey type pieces, but for the most part I'd have to agree...soft rock or adult alternative. If you like pigeonholing your artists, that is.
