The NFL from 1920-21 was known as the American Professional Football Association, and adopted the National Football League in 1922. The NFL Championship Game was first played in 1933. In in 1960, the American Football League was formed because of football's rising popularity. The two leagues came together in 1966 to form the National Football League as we know it today. Three original NFL teams and the 10 former AFL teams were part of the American Football Confrence (AFC) and the 13 NFL teams left over were in the National Football Confrence (NFC). In 1967 and 1968, the Super Bowl was known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. Not until Super Bowl III was the term "Super Bowl" officially used. The '67 and '68 games were then referred to as Super Bowls I and II respectively. Since then, the Super Bowl has been played between the winner of the AFC and and the NFC every year. Super Bowl 41 (XLI) will be played in Miami on February 4, 2007.

the nfl began in 1920
the regular season decided the title from 1920-1932 (just like the EPL does now)
they played an extra game in 1932 between the bears and portsmouth spartans (now detroit lions) indoors at chicago stadium...bears won 9-0
from 1933 to 1969, there was the nfl title game, the last won by the minnesota vikings
the super bowl began in 1967 as the first world championship afl vs nfl
the super bowl total is now 40
got tickets to Super Bowl XLI?

the NFL is very old, but to answer the 2nd question, 40 superbowls have been played. there were many other "unofficial games" that decided champions, but the 1st superbowl brought the nfl and afl together and decided who was the best.
