They are all sizes of instruments. The smallest standard size is 1/4. Then they increase, going up to 1/2 (what I used when I started in 5th grade), 3/4, and 4/4 or "full size" which is what I play now.

4/4 (or 1, if you know your fractions) is the standard size of violins. Adjustment that would compensate the need for body proportions. 3/4 is for children at least 3-4 feet tall. 1/2 for about the same height, and 1/4 for children about 2 (I doubt that there are though) - 3 feet tall

String number and fret number maybe??? Well, at least where there would be a fret, where you place your fingers. I know, violins don't have frets, I am thinking of guitars. If it were time signatures, I don't believe there is such a thing as 1/4.
