Your brake light switch has stopped working. This is very common in VW vehicles. They have what is known as a self adjusting brake light switch, and honestly, it's just made of too much plastic.

It's a safety thing that VW builds into their vehicles to prevent you from shifting your transmission out of gear if your not stepping on the brakes.

To Fix the brake light switch follow instructions that can be found here:

Detailed explaination with pictures on how to do it appropriately. If you skip one step, do one step out of order, or lock the switch into place before allowing the brake to depress down you can easily allow the switch to fail in a short period of time.

Please don't type in all caps, it's rude and the cyber equivalent of shouting at us. And it is a brake that stops your vehicle, not a break, which is present tense of broken.

The vehicle will not come out of park unless your foot is on the brake as a safety feature. It knows your foot is on the brake because the brake lights are on. If the brake lights are not coming on, that is why you can't shift. Fix that first. If you look in the glove box there will be a manual which will show you the location of the fuse box. But if the fuse has blown, it probably means there is a short in the system somewhere, so I would advise having your mechanic take a look.

I don't think it's the fuse. But you can check anyway. The fuse box should be located by your left knee when sitting in the drivers seat.

I think it's your brake lock safety switch. It sounds like it's bad or is disconnected somehow. You can look for a small manual override on the shifter console. It will say "brake lock" or something. If you read your owner's manual, it should tell you how to manually override it until you can get it fixed.

i think ur brakes r out. i mean if u leave it in park there's the parking brake so ur car won't move. those are a diff set of brakes. but once u put it into drive n step on the brake pedal they use a stronger set of brakes which if burnt out or are not working could cause a problem such as urs. mechanic time.. i mean i don't suggest u drive that thing before gettin it checked. i dunno golfs so i dunno where the box is.. srry bout that but i doubt thats the problem.
