It's just a personal drive to succeed. There is no clear motivation or ambition that defines a leader, it is the overall person. The fact that the person is working outside of their comfort zone shows forward thinking and the ability to lead. It's hard to step forward and do something that we are not comfortable with. Most people are followers. It takes a special breed of person to be a leader.

The motivation is different for all for selfish, humble, greedy, a million reasons.

But, to do what a leader is destined to do 'Lead'. Those who lead do so by making the hard decisions that others do not wish or cannot make for themselves. Hard decision doesn't not necessarily mean the "right thing" btw).

If it was comfortable for all to do it wouldn't be leading.
