Diesel fuel is the favorite of commercial engines because diesel fuel has about 25% more energy than gasoline and its combustion process unlocks that energy fairly efficiently - more efficiently than gasoline. Diesel and gasoline engines are engineered completely differently. As Scooby said, diesel engines have high torque at low rpms compared to gasoline engines. High torque (the engine's twisting force) at low rpm means that it is easier to move a stationary heavy load more easily. Technology is improving the weaknesses (power, noise, smell, particulate matter, NOx) of diesel engines making them more attractive for use in automobiles.

Diesel engines are 2 times as efficient at gaining power from fuel. It is cheaper for them to use diesel, even now with the diesel at such a high rate. This does not make sense ,since diesel is a lesser refined product than gasoline.

torque to horsepower ratio as well as dependability for example 7.3 litre turbo diesel will get around 20 mpg in the city has all the torque needed for towing and you can expect less in repairs if regular maintenance is performed

the diesel engine has a lot more low-end power or pulling powewr @lower rpm's thus needing an engine that will not have valve troubles operating at such low rpm's

Another reason is they will run for four or five hundred thousand miles before needing replacement.
Those big trucks run up the miles very quickly.
