Ok this can be a tough one. Being in a band myself, and currently looking to be signed, I may have a few good ways to break into the scene. First off you should cut a demo. Now a days there are allot of places to this. I would start by googleing recording studios in your area, or look in the phonebook. Most places will charge about 25-40 an hour, so be mindful about where you go to. Second get your name out there. The best way to do this is to play shows where ever you can. There is no place to small to put on a show and get yourself out there. Understand that most record companies get so many demos a month from so many bands that have been around allot longer then you. And Record Reps don't look for acts that are not established. So it may be years before a big record company comes knocking on your door. The one thing you have to have is drive, any record company small or large will not take any intrest in an artist if they don't have drive. They are more willing to help an artist who helps themselves. I can tell you that my band has had to play allot of dive bars and underground shows before that one really big show came along, or people started to take notice. Also you want to generate buzz about yourself. Bring something to the table that no one else is. Their are allot of artists out there who want the same thing, its tough but you have to have the edge, or you will be passed over. Keep contacts with people. The more you keep in touch with people who work in the music business, the better they will remember you when it comes to name dropping on there part. And finally be as friendly and nice to people you meet as you can. More often then not people get an ego about who they think they are, and a mark is put on them. And word spreads very fast about people who are rude or have a huge ego. It is really up to you how you want to act, but people will be more friendly and willing to help you out if you are nice. I hope this helps. True its not everything you need to know, but its a good start.

Ok. If you're serious, you're asking a BIG question w/ not easy answer. If it were easy, believe me, everyone & his jester would be doing it.

Right- you wanna be a bigtime rockstar type- well, for starters you need to be "marketable". Which, unfortunately in today's music scene means you must be attractive to increase your odds. You'll have to be willing to be made over BIG time.

-you'll need *something* resembling talent. Unfortunately, it isn't the 60s or 70s anymore, so the ability to play guitar has taken a back seat for the most part. (so the appearance/packaging thing would need to be boosted) You can count the # of female guitarist, singer/songwriters out now that've made it big on one hand.

-Helps Big time to know someone in the biz. If you have a rich daddy who knows someone in the industry, you've got a leg up...

- Sending demos cold is very likely just gonna get it tossed in the "circular file". Everyone & their mother is doing it too.

- You need an agent to book you gigs.

That's a start

You gotta get some stuff recorded and send it to music labels.
If you have composed stuff already, well, rehearse, go to a decent studio and record a demo cd - it doesn't cost too much. Then spread your stuff around. I'll listen to it if you want! Keep in mind that the tallest towers start from the ground, so do not be too avid for being a star right away. It will happen, but you gotta build a solid base first. So my advice now - get good at what you want to do, rehearse a lot, find other musicians if you need help, get your stuff recorded, spread it among your friends and the internet, listen to other people's opinions, improve your stuff, and that's it.

well, I don't know much personally . . . but you would probably need to get the right type of equipment and work your way into the right connections. Hang out around music places cus chances are they will know someone who knows someone . . . who knows someone ;)
I would think that if you just say "hey look at me!" to a record company . . . you have the potential of sounding desperate and being painfully squashed by their criticism . . . then again I've never tried that.
you have to have more than just a dream to get somewhere in life . . . you have to know how to get there and what it will take to stay there once you do. Make a demo tape . . . get some fans . . . and the record companies might be knocking on your door ;)
GOOD LUCK!!!!

Get a band together, practice. Learn enough songs to fill an hour and a half and try getting gigs at local bars that have live music at night. If you are any good you will grow and start to get better and better gigs. Also call up fraternities at colleges and ask them if they need a band for their next party. That's what John Hopper of Blues Traveller did to me when I was in college.

Also, going to college to learn more about music and meet others who play and want to do the same thing as you can help. Though not required obviously.

Make a demo tape at a recording studio & first thing you do is get it a copyright so no one can steal it by writing to the Library Of Congress. They will send you the information that you need. Its easy. Then,,get the radio stations to play it for you.Get the copyright first by sending them your recording on a regular tape or it can be written out.

you need to find a recording studio and see if they have any openings to record you. tell them you want a track tape. then after you get all your songs recorded you need to get them coppyrighted. the easy way to do that is to just mail the lyrics and music to yourself. if your willing to spend some more money send them away to the library of congress. then after that make some websites for yourself. i suggest Taxi, Purevolume, STL Punk, Sidecho, Myspace, and a dot com web page. if you sign up for Taxi (taxi.com) they will give you a link to another music website where you can post your songs. sorry i cant think of the name at the moment. after your done with the websites you need to premote yourself like crazy. play any local place thats willing to let you play. it doesnt matter how much they pay you or if they even pay you at all. play parties, bars, and sign up for any festivals or opening acts for local bands and stuff. you need to get your name out into the local scene. once you get a pretty good fanbase of as little 10-15 people you need to make yourself a street team. remember tho the more people you have on your street team the better. give them missions to premote you and give them points for it. once your name is out there anything could happen. its in fates hands after that.

You need to find a recording studio and a producer. Your producer will help you from there and give you advice.
