hi

i'm from Europe and would love to come to the States and stay there. I'm a student of English but I intend to get my master's degree in translation. I checked the Department of State's website and it says you can apply for a job only if you're an American citizen. How long does it take to get a citizenship and how long do you have to have that citizenship (how many years prior) before you can get a job like this (working for the US government or something)

thanx

Hello. I must take exception to what you read on the State Department website. Either it's wrong or you misread it. I say that because this land is full of non-citizens (here legally) who have jobs, and I know some of them. Certainly you must have a work permit or work visa, but you do not need to be a U.S. citizen to work here. Citizenship, by the way, takes several years to earn.

Somebody here has offerred some other information links. I hope you can find better information. Good luck, and I hope you can reach your goal of coming to the U.S.!

You do not need to be a citizen to get a job in the US. The company that hires you will need to start the process for getting you a visa. This can take several months after you are accepted for a position.

As far as becoming a US citizen is concerned, you have to live in this country for a certain amount of time before you can petition for citizenship, I believe 7 years, but that could definitely be wrong.

You can get a Work Visa. We have plenty of non-citizens who work here. The law requires that only one person in a household may work, so if you have family, they can't work as well. Contact your American Consulate in your country and they will tell you what you need to do. You will need to send them your passport and they will stamp it with a Visa.

From experience working with the Italian consulate, it took 3 months to get mio visto. Italian beauracracy is notoriously slow. You can expect a similar or longer wait, so get started now. You must have a sponsoring employer. It is easier to find one if you already live here, so get a student visa and get a master's degree here.

I would recommend working for the UN or a private company instead. You will get paid more.

Citizenship is granted at varying times. It could take 5 years or as little as a couple of months. It depends on your situation and status. Some are granted citizenship in exchange for working for the US. You could work as a translator for the civil service in exchange for citizenship if you have knowledge of a high need language (like Arabic or Farsi)

If the only requirement is to be a citizen, you should be able to apply the day you get the citizenship. However, earning citizenship in the US is a lengthy process. You'll need to start the papers immediately and expect to wait several years for the final confirmation of citizenship.

you will need to become a naturalized citizen. That can only happen after you have been a Legal Permanent Resident (LPR)of the USA for five years, and passing the US citizenship test.

You can become an LPR through employment, provided you have skills and talents that are valuable (an engineer, researcher, professional athlete, entertainer), through a National Interest Waiver (doctors, scientists, artists of world renown), through being an entreprenuer willing to invest at least $500,000, or by being the immediate relative of a US citizen or LPR (spouse, child, parent, sibling).

check the BCIS web site. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Further...I commend you on the responsible way in which you intend to live your life here in the USA. You should be proud of yourself for wanting to become a citizen and not just an illegal moocher. Kudos to you! I hope it all works out for you!
