First off, cardboard works well if you're looking for low-cost but durable casing. Use duct tape and make a small container that will hold your egg. Making a prism (three-sided box) and taping more cardboard on the ends works quite well.

Next you need some kind of padding on the inside, something that will take the shock of the hit but not send it through to the egg itself. If you can find any of that bubble packing wrap (especially the big kind), that works well.

I've done this twice, and the second time we used rubber bands and tape and made a sling for the egg so it was suspended in all directions inside the box. You need padding as well, but this helps the egg not to hit the sides.

Good luck :)

In your design remember this. Change in velocity multiplied by time equals your rate of acceleration. It is deceleration (negative acceleration) that will cause your egg to break. So, you have to increase the time the "egg" stops to reduce it acceleration.

go to sciencenter.org
Every year they have a famous egg drop competition. There should be ideas on there or at least past winners so you can see what they did.
