The whole purpose of the Housing Selection Scheme (in NI at least) is to determine Housing Stress. That is to determine who has the greater need. Such a Scheme cannot discriminate against and must favour those deemed in most need. So yes those who are Homeless or vulnerable will get priority. But don't go presenting urself as homeless at your local Housing Executive or Council office just to "jump" the list. There are measures in place to test intentionality and priority. Anyone who works in Social Housing will tell you that the House Sales Scheme has made the job a lot harder as we work with ever declining stock and higher expectation. At least half the people we house in our district are working but this cannot be a factor when u do a Housing Assessment nor an allocation. Neither can nationality, race, gender or religion. If u have at least indefinite leave to remain or asylum seeker status u can be placed on the waiting list and ur housing need tested.

You can't get one if you are not working let alone if you have a job!!!

I was 6 months pregnant (and unable to work as very sick) and faced with homelessness because we couldn't afford to pay our mortgage and they still refused us a council house! They said we'd get 6 weeks in a B&B and then either have to pay £550+ a month to a private landlord or live on the streets/in a homeless shelter with our newborn.

Social Housing is no longer an option in this country. We were told there's a 5 year waiting list and still no guarantee of ever getting a house.

Forget it you'll just have to pay a mortgage or get ripped off by a crooked greedy private landlord like the rest of us.

This makes me smile ... not where i live. Not even from a housing association. Unless you are prepared to somehow make yourself unintentionally homeless and then they will put you in temporary accomodation (Bed and Breakfast). And then you get to jump the queue and 99% of the time they will offer you a place on one of the lovely estates.
Not sure on other boroughs though but i don't think there is a lot of difference.

Edit to say that technically you can but that was the smile. You never will. I bet there are more on housing benefit than there is social housing in england at least.

Council houses often are reserved for muslims, many of which have not even arrived.
Many loony left councils favour those who are out of work .Theyre "vulnerable"
Govt policy is that quotas have to be filled and many council houses stand empty until that quota is filled.
WHO voted for that monster?

Some replies will blame Thatcher for a lack of Council Property. However Blair said he would build build and build. Like everything else he goes in no10 and promptly forgets. You can if you can find one if you are working. You have more chance if your not or illegal.

No, you can't get one unless you are a single Mum, under 21 or a criminal jus out of prison. Other wise you are not a priority and can live on the streets and die as far as the council care.

Lose your job and become a scrounger and your local Council will fall over backwards showering you with benefits - including housing.
