Most people have given you some good advice. Here is the minimum recommendations I provide for anyone that set up a home wireless network for.

1. Change the default SSID for the access point. To many folks know the defaults
2. Change the default ADMIN password. Again to many people know the defaults.
3. Turn off the broadcast of the SSID. This will prohibit other folks from knowing you have the wireless access point.
4. Turn on MAC filtering. While it is true that many newer network cards can be set for MAC filtering without knowing the proper MAC they still won't get in.

These 4 steps will set you up for basic Wireless security and can be done on your own. Make sure you are doing this from a computer that is wired to the access point. Otherwise you will lose your wireless connection ad not be able to get in and change things. I also recommend that after each step you check the wireless connectivity.

Finally if you access point/router is providing Dynamic IP addresses to the other computes you can change the range of those IP addresses to be different then the default setting.

There are a couple of ways that will do the trick. Most routers (or wireless access points) support WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) You can put a pass phrase or key into the router or access point to prevent anybody from getting in that does not have it. You should check the documentation that came with your equipment on the instructions to do this. Another method is to use MAC address filtering. This will prevent any device from connecting to your network without its serial number (mac address) being listed in a table. Not all routers support this so again, you will need to check your documentation. It is always good to secure your network in some manner.
There is a ton of information on the web that will help you with this. Just search for "wireless network security"

Good Luck

You can protect your network using WEP/WPA encryption from your wireless Router Console. You can also refer your manual of wireless router. Usually most of the wireless routers comes up with proprietry protection softwares but if you wish you can purchase a software like McAfee Wireless Home Network Security(Just make sure you check that your router and firmware version is supported on the list on their website). this way whenever some will try to access your network he will need a security key that we call WEP key. which keep changing in a minutes or two. He can prompt you for that key and if you wish you can grant him the access or deny. Refering the wireless router will be much easier than reading this.

the easiest way would be to encrypt your wireless router/internet. To do set, simply open your router or wireless device's setup program or utility and go through the manufacturer's directions. You should probably be able to use a basic 64 bit WEP encryption because unless somebody REALLY wants your internet they wont bother craking it. You will simply set a WPA key which will usually be in hexadecimal, alphanumeric, or character only which you will enter when you connect to your wireless access point through your desktop, laptop, wireless pda, etc.
Hope this helps!

log onto your router (a simple ip address usually something like 192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.2.1)) the same address that was used in configuring your router to access your broadband

look for the wireless setting ad turn the security settings on and then configure a 128 bit WEP key which will be a hexadecimal string of characters (print these out when done) you then need to add this WEP key information to any wireless hardware so they can all speak to the router.

as with any Encryption it is possible to break this code, however it will take a long time to break as fragments of transmissions are required and a lot of proccessing power. so for all intents and purposes you system will be secure

if you have any problems with this speak to the manufacturer of your router, ask about setting up wireless security / WEP

Use all the security keys explained in the instructions with your router. Or, to REALLY make sure no one outside your home can get the signal, line your whole house with a fine copper mesh screen. The drawback is that no signals can then get into your house either--like a cell phone signal, or AM/FM radio, etc. This is what some corporations do along with metallic mesh tint for windows.
If you do not absolutely HAVE to have wireless, then don't. Get a regular router and run a CAT-5 cable through the walls to rooms you want a hookup in.

2wire routers have either 64 or 128 bit wireless encryption enabled by default right out of the box. You can find in on the sticker on the bottom. Unless yours for some reason is not enabled, anyone can connect to your wireless signal. You can access the web gui by typing the routers default IP address 192.168.0.1 into your web browser, and go to the wireless settings link to ensure the security encryption is enabled. If not, you can enable it by choosing the corresponding radio button, and click save. Just make sure you assign the WEP key on the sticker from the bottom to your wireless card.

1) Use wireless encryption protocol (WEP) to prevent someone from connecting unless they know your encrypted key.

2) Do not broadcast your SID, so when people turn on their wirless PCs or laptops, they cannot be seen in a list of available networks.

Keep in mind that in a typical home wireless network, most of the time your network signal can only be picked up for about two neighbors away. Beyond that, the signal is too weak. You can try it out with your laptop to see...

Set WPA or WEP keys.... Ever router is different you will need to check your manual for details.

Another thing you could do is MAC address filtering. But seeing how newer NICs will let you change your MAC address this isn't much use(They used to come burned in and no way to change them).

You can even setup a firewall option to block certain sites/programs. This should help stop people from using your internet.

By the way if you have WPA then use it because WEP is known to be broken. If you don't have WPA then just use WEP anything is better then nothing.
