This is a very dynamic question and one that is very personal to me. There is no right or wrong answer, just each individiuals perception based upon education and life expirence..
First off I am a recruiter for a financial services company and I talk to many many people everyday. After a while you can see where people's perspectives and mindsets are at.
There is a lot of social conditioning and beliefs we adopt and don't even realize it. We have all heard " The rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer". That and other sayings rolls off people's tounges without any thought. There are some realities that we must look at to understand the division between the classes and why it continues to grow.
Our educational system is out dated. Yes we can teach people to work in the Tech industry and teach people to work at large companys and have a good job. That is also part of the problem , we teach people how to be "employees", we chase a paycheck and we borrow our lives from the lending industry, we mortgage a home, our cars and we use credit in place of cash we don't have. the working middle class is fast becoming the new poor.
We are taught that investing in the global economy is risky and saving in the bank is safe yet the bank invests our money in the global economy. As far as the rich go, they are not special or better than as so many people think, they just know what we are not taught in school. The majority of rich people are not employees they own businesses or a business system that lets their efforts compount and duplicate.
In other words the middle calss and poor are in the wrong vehicle
We are trained to be employees and untill the education system starts teaching people to be leaders and builders we will continue to see this gap widen.

Until the point the poor realize they won't get rich. It amazes me the number of poooooor people in the south that vote the GOP. I can only think they believe they will some day be rich. Why else would someone support the repeal of the inheritance tax. Heck it starts at 2 mil. How many southern boys will really die with that much to pass on. Maybe the lotto will come through.

I believe we will see a growing division. I don't believe that poverty is always rooted in laziness. There are millions who are not lazy, but through certain circumstances cannot get the education/training that could lead to a better paying job. Even if they practice wise budgeting of their money, they still cannot get ahead due to diminishing wages. This trend will worsen as some corporations, motivated by greed, will continue to outsource talent and readily adopt whatever wage/cost diminishing trend pops up. In a nutshell, Globalism is bringing down the standard of living for Americans. While costs may be cut by tactics like outsourcing, the price of goods, cost of living and wages do not seem to adjust. Here's to a bright future.

It has always been, if the poor hate the rich why should the rich not hate the poor? Settled? what are the poor going to do, beat up on the rich? they may get shot.

As long as government continues to grow and enables people to be completely dependent on government for all their needs, yes.
