yes i always cut mine back
when the leaves start to go yellow . ( now)

I cut them down to 3-4"
rake a little earth round them,
to protect them from the worst weather

love my irises
They will come back, next year 'twice as nice '

No, they should be left to die back on their own; once the leaves are brown, you can trim back for "tidiness". Unless you are moving them, then you might want to cut them back so the tops don't cause them to tip (they are shallow rooted).

you can cut them back later in the fall but I never bother to do it and they all seem to be ok

Yes, but not while they are still green. They are storing up nutrients. You can wait until last minute or Spring.
