The hamstrings are located in the back of the thigh and are made up of 3 different muscles. They are the biceps femoris (both long and short head), the semimembranosus, and the semitendinosus. These muscles work to flex the leg at the knee (bring your heel toward your buttocks), rotate the the the knee (both away and toward the center of the body), and flex thigh backward from the hip. What movement is affected depends on which of the muscles is hurt. Flexion at the knee uses all of them. External rotation of the knee uses biceps femoris long and short head. Internal rotation of the knee uses semitendinosus and semimembranosus. Entension of the hip uses long head of biceps femoris, semimembranosus, and semitendinosus.

Walking, bending, turning, squatting, sitting. The hamstrings help support the pelvic region and back, so other muscle groups will also start to hurt, as they attempt to minimize the strain on the injured muscle. If the muscle is just strained, ibuprofen and magnesium will help with the pain. If it's more, you'll need medical attention, plenty of rest, and possibly stronger pain medication, so the muscles can heal properly.

Well like you said, your hamstring muscles are the ones that are affected. Walking would be more painful than usual.

When I have health questions I go to www.webmd.com and I find them to be quite helpful. I visit that site often. So take a go at that and if that does help you, you could always visit www.ask.com and type in hamstring or something along the lines of that and you will get some good leads. If it happened to you take it easy ok.
