I see breakdancers and other hiphop dancers doing all the smooth liquid movements where their feet glide across the floor. I know if I were to try that in a pair of cross-trainers, the rubber soles would catch and I'd be going NOWHERE. Are there specific shoes that are better for this or do they take a belt sander to their sneakers or what?

Try dance sneakers. Those have the traction similar to that of suede soled shoes. www.allaboutdance.com. However, with enough training, you will be able to do your moves in any shoes.
