Episode IV) A New Hope also the first Stars Wars movie released. It is part IV of the first prequel Stars Wars movie The Phantom Menace. It is the fourth chapter of the series.

Well, it will be a new hope for the Galaxy, which is already ryuled by the "evil" empire. I would say that this will be the reason. However, I am not that sure that from the very beginning the movie was called "A New Hope". Didn't they put that name later? Originally, it was just "Star Wars"

Lucas had actually written all of the series, but realized the epic scale he had written could not be filmed for the budget of $11 million dollars. So, he broke it up into episodes after the "first" film, at that time simply titled "Star Wars," became a hit.

Well George Lucas was most definitely thinking about the fact that it is ACTUALLY the 3rd episode not the 1st. It's called A New Hope because Luke presents a new opportunity for another rise of the Jedi, he is the "Hope" that can save the force and destroy the Sith
