The Acropolis was the center of the Greek city-state of Athens. It is the location of the Parthenon and many other important religoius and civic buildings that are now important ruins as well as the sacred spring of Athena (the Godess for who the city is named after)
Other cities may have had an Acropolis, I don't know if the term was used only at Athens.
