Alright, do you know who you Internet Service Provider is? Likely Its AOL, and that is why you can only connect when you are signed into AOL. If that is the case then there is nothing you can do unless you change your ISP.

Firefox is just a browser. I am assumong you use AOL to access the internet thru dialup. They are your provider, so you have to use them to get online first, then use firefox. Your friends access is faster probably because she has a fast broadband connection.

Firefox does not provide you with an internet connection. It just lets you browse the Internet, like Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Chances are your friend has a DSL or Cable Internet connection and this is why she can just open up Firefox and start surfing the WEB. DSL and Cable do not require you to dial in to get online. They are "Always" Connected.

If you have an icon on your desktop, try double-clicking to open it. You may not be able to get online, but the window should open. Then go to Tools, Options, Update. Make sure Firefox is checked under "Automatically check for updates to:" and "automatically download and install the update." After clicking ok, it should search for updates, if it wasn't set up that way to begin with.
