My family and I live in the country- right next to some grain bins, no less... and we are having a huge problem with mice... We use traps but it dosen't seem to be putting a dent in them. They're all moving in becuase it's so cold outside. I'm pregnant so I can't get a cat and I can't use poison because I have young children and a dog. I have heard that if you pack dryer sheets around clothes, towels, boxes, etc. that they like to chew into, they'll stop. What can I do? Are there any other regular household things I can do while I'm trying to get them with traps?! What brand (if it matters) of dryer sheets do I use?!

Shake-Away RODENTS... it main ingredient is dried fox and bobcat Urine 100% natural, non-toxic and safe for use around children, pets, plants and the environment. dosent smell either ;P

I have used shake-away products to get rid chipmunks, field mice from under our foundation, keep raccoons from trashing our garbage cans, and squirrels commandeering out bird feeders… It works… you need to continue treating after they disappear to keep them away… I use it 2;xs a year for prevention & have been pest free for 2 years now !

Goods luck! ;)

First of all, there's nothing wrong with having a cat. ALSO, a rat terrier dog will kill off rodents.

Secondly, you MUST find out how they are getting into your house. Block ALL holes.
Mice can squeeze into the smallest holes!

You MUST have the people that own the grain bins clean up their yards around the bins. Rats and mice are a serious health hazard.

NEXT, try getting a box wind-up trap made of metal. It is about 8x10x6" high, has a wind-up key, you bait it with peanut butter, and you set it close to the wall where you think the mice might be coming from. The FIRST mouse explores, goes into it and is caught. It is a live trap, something like a one-way ferris wheel with a jail at the discharge end. All the others hear it squeaking, and head on into it too. You can trap 20 mice in it live. Then you dispose of them, live or dead.

Good luck with that, you need it.

Plug all the holes in your house-especially around drain pipes using steel wool, not SOS soap pads.
They do have something that you can plug into sockets that emit sounds that only the mice can hear.
I will tell you something that I read on a website that I am a member of.
Go to a health food store, or maybe a drug store and buy pure peppermint oil. Saturate cut out pieces of cardboard with the oil. Mice hate the smell! It deters them really well. Place them around your house. It's all natural and you don't have to worry about you being pregnant or your children.
They also have sticky traps you can buy, but I don't like those because sometimes the mice don't die and you find them squirming on the traps and making awful sounds. Though I hate mice, I don't like the idea of them suffering.
If you use regular traps, try baiting them with some peanut butter. Don't use a lot, a little will do just fine.
As far as dryer sheets, try Bounce.

place all your grain in metal garbage cans, unless we're talking silos.
leave no garbage outside and because its cold the mice want the clothes to take back to their holes in the ground for comfort.

you have some alternatives if you don't have dogs near the mice holes...take some poisoned meat and place in or near the hole to have them drag it into the family, mice are cannibals and will even eat their own once dead. its a major job and you have to keep at it. on a farm they live in the fields and never run out of food.

now the other is get those mangy cats, I know your with child, but the cat problem is only after birth and the cats can not be around the baby.
get the cats, get rid of some or all of the mice, have the baby and get rid of the cats or keep the baby away from the cats!

Well this question is right up my alley. Mice and rats are my worst fear, one time we had a mouse in the house and I made my Husband take me to a Motel until he caught it ! LOL So anyway what you need are these little boxes, they plug into a regular socket, and they emit a sound that you can't hear but the rodents can and it drives them away. They make different sizes to cover different square footages. You can pick them up at any hardware store or home improvement store. They also work on insects and spiders, what a plus, no bugs either! Hope this helps and congratulations on the baby.

I used Pine to start up off once I first began into the rodent craze. It labored nicely, in spite of the undeniable fact that it relatively is no longer the perfect while it contains how many times to alter it and scent (in spite of the undeniable fact that it does not scent as undesirable as Aspen, this is greater proper than the two Pine and Cedar, by utilising the way!) Carefresh is great, yet incredibly expensive. you will discover different paper beddings that are fairly such as Carefresh, yet Carefresh is, possibly, the perfect thank you to pass. in case you have become mice, mushy Aspen shavings, or paper bedding, are the two stable. stable success! P.S. a hundred,000 mice?! Now that's a frightening theory...

You really need a couple cats. Or a rat terrier dog. Make them a nice warm shelter and keep them outside. We had barn cats for years. Gave them a nice place to keep warm. Never a mouse in the house for 10 years. The cats would even have to go hunting in the fields to bring back a mouse. They kept them so far away. Remember - country without cats or dog = mice.

Yes, you can have a cat. Millions of pregnant women have had cats, and nothing bad happened. Just keep the kitty litter box out in garage or something, and have husband clean it out for you and wash his hands. Borrow a neighbors cat once in a while. Or you could put out snacks for another predator that won't live w/ you. Human urine works w/ deer. Maybe w/ mice.

Not sure, but I do know always keep the mousetraps against the walls.
Mice/rats do not see very clearly, so they tend to hug the walls while in motion.
A trap in the center of the room will be the death of your pinky toe!
Otherwise, invest $300 for an exterminatrix!!!!!

Buy some cotton swabs and oil of peppermint and stuff it in the cracks and spaces they are coming in. also get an arsenal of glue traps. If you do want a cat get a liitermaid cat box that scoops itself.
