Can you give me your opinion on really good color photo printers? I am looking to purchase. Is it true that the laser jet is better than a ink jet?

If you are wanting to do photos, you definately want an inkjet printer. Laserjet printers are great for normal printing, but inkjet printers will deliver much better photos.

As far as which photo printer is right for you, it depends on what all you would like to do with it. Would you like to print normal documents as well. Do you want to copy and scan also? For photos, I recommend HP's new line of printers. Photos come out clean and clear, waterproof, smudgeproof, and fade resistant for 100 years. I have included links that show more information about these printers.

Portable 4x6 photo printers.
If you just want to print 4x6 photos, you can purchase a portable photo printer. These machines are strictly for photos. HP has a new line of portable photo printers that print 4x6, 5x7, and 4x12 (panoroma). Most have a LCD screen where you can view and edit your photos without using a computer. They cost between $100 - $250, depending on the features. These printers are handy if you want to print your photos at parties, sports games, on vacation, or anywhere else you could take your printer with you. These are popular printers right now because of their portablility. The photo printer used by the critters in Over the Hedge is an HP portable photo printer.

Regular photo printes
Many people want great photos, as well as normal productivity (such as printing documents, copying, scanning, or faxing). If you do not plan on traveling with your printer and want more funcionality, these are the printers for you. If you do not want to copy, scan, or fax, the HP D7160 or D7360 is a good choice ($150 - $199). If you want to print, copy, and scan, I own the HP Photosmart C5180 (does not fax, $199). This is the printer I recommend to everyone. If you do want fax, the HP C6180 has everything, including fax.

I recommend the 6-cartridge HP Photosmart printers for photo printers. Many companies are now using the individual ink cartridges now for each color of ink. Unlike Canon or Epson, with HP you can purchase all 6 cartridges along with 150 sheets of 4x6 waterproof paper in a combo pack for $37. This averages out to 24 cents per photo and the photos are much better than what you would get at Wal Mart (Canon and Epson printers cost 55 cents per photo). The HP 6-cartridge photo printers are the most customer-friendly photo printers on the market.

My recommendation to you is:
HP A616 (A617 at Best Buy) for a portable 4x6 photo printer.

HP D7160 for a regular printer that also prints great photos.

HP C5180 for a regular printer that also copies, scans, and prints great photos. (My top recommendation, though all these photo printers have about the same quality).

HP C6180 is you want everything the C5180 has plus the ability to fax and wireless networking.

True, HP makes good printers, but try to get parts for one two years later. They stop making parts for them after two years. According to Consumer Report Mag. Cannon makes the best all in one printer. The Pixma MP800. If you plan on buying a new printer every couple of years, get the HP PhotoSmart 475 GoGo.

I have and HP Photosmart C4140. It's great, no complaints, the pictures I print look just as good, sometimes better than if I had gotten them developed. It is also a scanner and copier and was like 80 bucks.

Laserjets are better than inkjets but they are also more expensive. HP makes the best printers. Another option is to take the pictures to Walmart and have them print it. Its a lot cheaper than printing on your own.
