So I talked to a nurse today about back pain in my lower back. I thought something was terribly wrong. She told me to stop stressing, rest and take tylenol if i needed it. She said it could be just that I'm getting bigger in the front and its pushing on my back. I'm 17 weeks and pushing out a bit in the front. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this. This is my first pregnancy and the nurse says its normal at 17 weeks unless you have bleeding, mucus or etc. Let me know. :)

Your body releases a hormone that causes all of the joints to loosen up. This is so the hip joints can loosen up to a degree and prepares the way for the baby to come out through them.

However, it's not specific to those joints and effect the joints in your low back as well. This causes them to "sag". Because you have a weight pulling your lower back forward, this puts strain on your low back muscles (which now must take up the job of holding things in position now that the ligaments are doing less of the work) and can hurt the discs in your lower back (which then refer pain to the rest of the region). Result? Low back pain.

It's normal and you will recover shortly after you have your baby. Just don't go nuts and hurt these areas of your body by over stressing them while they are vulnerable. You would be surprised at the number of women who think it's OK to go to the gym and start doing deadlifts while pregnant.

If it gets bad, go see a chiropractor. Chiropractors treat this specific situation all the time.

Back pain is always normal with pregnancy. I am 29 weeks pregnant and sometimes I have a hard time standing for a long period of time. An ice pack and some Tylenol work wonders for this.

I have bad back pain, usually after 3 or 4 in the afternoon, and since I'm still working at 31 weeks I just go home and take some tylenol pm to help me sleep.

yeah I have had lower back pain for a couple of weeks now! im nearly due though but carrying neat so only felt pressure these last few weeks. Ain't carrying a big baby either. The nurse is correct, it could just be the way the baby is lying- wait til it pushes its little feet up into your rib cage!!ouch

she's right. it's totally normal, and your back will probably continue to hurt throughout the rest of your pregnancy. the shift in weight has alot to do with it. one of the best things you can do is visit a chyropractor. do it for the rest of your pregnancy. it helps your back when you do eventually go into labor. there's nothing to panic about at all. your body will be going through so many changes, you are totally doing the right thing by asking your obgyn and midwife and nurses. don't ever be afraid to ask them a question, no matter what time of day or night it is. good luck with your pregnancy :D

I had pain in my lower back during my pregnancy. Early on too. I think it has a lot to do with how much room you have and how you carry the baby. I'm a very small frame person so that baby took up a lot of room. Just relax and try not to worry too much about it.
