BS. I played with fire when I was young and I almost burned the house down.

Confiscate the lighters and tell him that if you see it again, you are going to ground the hell out of him. Learning about fire safety might also be good, like how to put out grease fires or electrical fires, just in case he doesn't listen.

Send him to a burn ward too, just to show him what "stages" are.

since ll yrs. old i've been so delighted about fire. i play with the candles and matches, and with useless birtday candels. and dont' even get me started w/ fireworks. i've almost burned down a little section in the middle of my garage floor trying to light a match(it was flat, it was a harmless accident). i keep things safe though. my mom watches me and doesn't let me get to dangerous w/it though. i've learned my lesson because one day when my parents were gone i decided to play w/ some candle wax and a cotton in the lit candle. i accidently lit the cotton ball and dropped it on my parents dresser but got it out before anything big happened. i got up the most of the wax and covered the slightly burn part. my parent's still havent' found out. so now i know the real dangers and it doesnt' seem real sometimes until it happens or almost happens. it's fact i think about the stages and all, but i cant' work w/ lighters my thumbs just won't work, lol, either way there can be problems so just watch your kids or w/e if you decide to let it be a "stage".

It's a stage for all kids to be very curious about the world around them, and attempt to figure it all out. But they generally aren't aware that it's a stage... To them it's just, "hmm. this looks new to me, let's explore it". In matters like this you should never listen to what your child sees it as... And how old is the kid? Does he have any mental disorders, or something like a Pervasive Developmental Disorder? Does he have any history of violence, or temper tantrums? Physical defects? Incurred any psychological trauma? Been through a divorce? These are all some serious things to take in to consideration before acting on or reacting to these disturbing behaviors.... I wish ya the best, and I hope he doesn't burn the house down!

Kids will always be curious but playing with lighters only leads to arson. Lock the lighters up or get him/her into other activities to keep them busy so they won't have time to think about something this dangerous.

Good news and bad news. Good news is I did the same thing in my pre- to early teens and turned out just fine. Bad news, in my opinion my pyromania led me to try smoking and other stupid things. In conclusion, I would certainly say it's a stage young men go through, but monitor it closely. The more understanding you are with your son, the more open he'll be with you.
