They try to say Ed Gein is the inspiration for any movie or book that involves a killer obsessed with flesh and necrophilia.

Really, the only similarity I see between Ed Gein and the book is the main character's infatuation with his mother, and the occasional cross-dressing.

Yes he was and also with Leatherface in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and Buffalo Bill in "Silence of the Lambs". He is known as "the muse of horror".
