Just use good ol' fashion bleach!! Start your washing machine and put the detergent and bleach in, using hot water, after the machine has filled half full, add your towels fabric softener. This should do the trick!! If it should bleach them out some, then just dye them back, it is better then being molded and smelling that way. Bleach will always kill mold, however, don't put wet towels in any closed container and leave them for any time or your problem will continue. Just an FYI!!

Wash the towels with a cup of ammonia in hot water along with the usual amount of detergent but, make the load a lil lighter, put in a few less towels than usual. Dry at hottest setting immediately after washing.

Lysol makes something to kill anything growing in laundry. Put it in w/ your wash. Always put laundry directly into the dryer. This smell often comes from wet clothes sitting too long in washer. Also, if it's towels, change them every 2-3 days especially in winter.

Put white vinegar in the rinse cycle in the hottest water temp possible for your towels. Then if possible hang outside in the sun to dry. If not, put in the dryer on the hotest setting with 2 or 3 fabric softener sheets. Good luck!

Use Borax, Muleteam is the brand name look for it on the laundry aisle, directions on box, added to wash water and it really gets rid of tough odor and stains....great product! Also, My Grandma always hung towels outside to dry it they smelled like mildew and on a windy day, especially airs them out real nice....

You might try soaking them in the bathtub for several hours with soap and a bottle of 409-type liquid cleaner. This is what I use for stains on clothing. Also, you can dump a small box of baking soda in with the detergent when you wash them.

baking soda or white vinegar for sure. Use regular Arm & Hammer in all your wash loads, takes smells out all the time. But if you dry something that has an odor, it may be set in the fabric, and may not come out.
