I like compaq. I have a 1040 (X1000) and when I first got it I had to send i back twice but since then I had no issues with it. I have had it abour 3 1/2 yrs now. I would definatly buy another laptop from them.
The main problem I find is that when you send it in the first time nothing gets done. Its on the 2nd time the they seem to fix the issue.
The AMD Athlon is a good processor. I prefer AMD over Intel.

Well compaq is hp's budget line. So they are going to cut corners to provide the customer with a better price. In general I don't think thier tech support is all that great. AMD makes great processors. Maybe you just are having bad luck. I compare it to buying a car. If you are going to have major problems with a new vehicle generally they happen quick and often. Same with a pc. You may just be the one that got a bum machine. If you continue to have problems I suggest logging a complaint with Compaq.

We have the same computer. Mine messed up right after I got it. The screen images became distorted out of no where and I could not fix it, even when I tried. I got my friends to help me fix it and it works great now. I haven't had any problems since. It was very upsetting to have my new computer mess up when I hadn't even had a chance to use it!

Well laptops tend to be unreliable. That and to keep it cheap they use cheap parts.
