I've been thinking of doing this on my 99 eclipse, lucky for you, I have the haynes manual that covers all from 95-01!

Also, why are you doing so?

Stuff you'll need: Phillips and flat screwdrivers, pry bar (or flat screwdriver) metric wrenches/socket set, lots of time.

First things first, disconnect your battery. Let it sit for 5 min or so to let any stored charge fully disapate. Remove your guage bezel and instrument cluster using a screwdriver (screws located at the top for bezel and in three of four corners on the cluster). Using a trim pry bar, or a flat screwdriver, pry out the tweeters/plugs near the windshield, air outlets, radio/temp knob trim (phillips required again here too), the cluster that holds the temp knobs, and the glove box. There about 15 screws for you to look for, and 6 different types of bolts (there are about 15 of these. Don't forget to pull the trim peices that sit at the bottom and front sides of your center console, you may need to remove that as well... so... The ashtray/cupholder just pulls out with enough force, there's 4 screws below that, there are 2 screws on either side of the console glove box, and there are two screws behind the center trim panel (about where the top of the radio is). You are going to need to unhook the connections for the ciglighter, and the light (pull, and twist and pull respectively) as well as the light for the ashtray (also twist and pull) If you want to, you can also remove the covers for the steering wheel column, just 4 screws on the bottom of that, and the steering wheel itself, 4 screws behind it will release the airbag, (this is where the manual doesn't specify) "remove the lock from the airbag clock spring and disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the airbag module." Then remove the nut holding the wheel on, and mark "relation of shaft to hub to simplify installation and ensure alignment." The manual suggests you use a puller to remove the wheel and warns strongly not to pound wheel of shaft to remove it (but doesn't say why... just don't hit it...) You can probably rent one of these pullers from an autoparts store. For re-installation, the manual says, "turn the clock spring clockwise by hand until it stops, then rotate the spring counter clockwise approximately 3 to 3-1/8 turns, as necessary until the marks align." Then pull the wiring through, and reverse removal.

That should be everything... btw... I suggest that you buy a manual for your car if you plan on doing things like this again... the one I bought costs about $20 and has saved me countless times as much. Haynes and Chilton make the best, when in doubt, buy both and cross reference.

The reason you can't find a double-DIN dash kit is that the factory radio is a double-DIN stack. An after-market double-DIN head unit doesn't require a mounting kit to fit perfectly. If you still have the original radio, you can just remove the side mounting brackets and attach them to the new head unit instead. If you're missing the stock radio, you'll need to get a new set of mounting brackets through a Mitsubishi dealer or a used parts source.
