Everything on the Internet is identifed by an IP address. In the case of your computer, the IP address is a number that uniguely identifies your computer on the Internet. Think of it like the PCs phone number. Nothing can call yout computer without its IP address.

For the Internet, your IP address is given to you by your ISP. Depending on the company, they may assign you a permanent number that you use everytime, or they may have a pool of numbers from which you grab a different one each time you log on. (With Dialup it is always from a pool of numbers).

To find your (current) IP address, click on the Start Button
Select Run
Type in: cmd
A DOS window will appear
Type in: ipconfig
It will display four lines of information including your IP address
If will be four number (eache between 0 and 255) separated by periods - like 192.168.000.101.

ISP is you internet service provide yes they provide you with an IP. But basically, IP is a unique number given to every computer based on the browser. It is used and recorded for statistics and for legal puposes. IE: You sent a bomb threat to your school from your laptop, they would then find out what computer you used it from and find out who the computer was registered to.

IP=Internet Protocol, IP number is a number that is assigned to you while you are connected to a network, think of it as a phone number that is assigned to you, when you connect to a website a request is made from your ip number, then the server knows where to send back all the information...if you are using dial-up(modem) connection then your ip will change every time you connect, if you use cable, dsl then your ip never changes..to find it go www.whatismyip.com
