It's actually not that expensive, especially if you're doing all the work yourself.

I suggest you go to a lock smith, not you local hardware store. That way you can get good locks and have a few extra keys made while you're there. You could also have them made so you can use the same key for both doors.

You want to get a dead bolt lock with the bold part that is as long as you can get it, that way it's harder for someone to break in.

You also want to make sure that the striker plate, the metal thingy attached to your door jam, has VERY long skrews, so that the screws actually go right through the door frame and into something substancial. This will make it harder for the bad guy to break in. You will probably have to get the screws at your hardware store. Just take the originals with you and ask someone to find you ones that are the same width, but about 2" long.

If you don't really know what you're doing, when it comes to installing the lock. Ask your lock smith to show you how to do it while you're in the store. Take notes if that's what it takes.

Good Luck!

When the door is open look on the side of the door you will find a "X" drive screw just below the key hole, with your key in the lock remove this screw its about 2" long and you can then remove the barrel of the locking system, if it wont come out easy then turn the key until it will. Take it to your local locksmiths, large hardware shop or a double glazing firm and they will be able to sell you some replacements might be about £ 25 each Replace in reverse order.
