After I formatt the hard disk and reload fresh from CD, what should I update first when I go back online?
The O/S or the antivirus? Both take a considerable amount of time after nuking and reloading.

Recommend that you install the antivirus first while offline. (If you are using something you download like AVG or Avast, download it first and burn the setup file to a CD so you can install it offline. You can also download SP2 to your computer and burn it to CD in advance. Then both can be installed offline (and faster) without risking the computer.

Once online, update the antivirus first (since it is preinstalled should only take a few seconds) then the OS.

First, a fresh machine is never online until all updates and AV installed. Download all service packs and av software before hand and install off of a thumbdrive or CD. Than it's OS updates first, than antivirus/spyware/popup stopper.

I'll usually skip all of the hotfixes and patches issued after SP2 and instead take care of them once the machine is back online. If your reinstall already has SP2, skip to just AV install, than put machine online for the other updates.
