Before buying a portable fireplace, such as a chiminea or a tabletop fire pit, there's something consumers need to know.
Fire departments require those planning to kindle a portable fireplace on their property to obtain a permit and follow specific guidelines for operating the wood-burning unit.
"(Portable fireplaces) are contained so they look like they're safe, but you have to take into consideration the heat that they generate," said Chief Roy Greenleaf of the Newington Fire Department.
New Castle Fire Chief Carl Roediger said the state guidelines for operating a portable fireplace specify that wood-burning units 2 feet or less in diameter are a Category 1 fire. They can be kindled at any time of day, even during the rain, but must be kept at least 15 feet from any structure.
Units between 2 and 4 feet in diameter, however, are a Category 2 fire. They must be kept at least 50 feet from any structure and may only be kindled between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m.
Rye allows kindling between 5 p.m. and midnight.
Those are state regulations i think that they apply to Wolfeboro, new Hampshire as well.

I'm in Oregon, but safety would tell me that 30' if the wind blew in the direction of the house.
I dug mine 2' into the ground and stone 3' above the ground.

it was also good for weeds, and lawn trimmings and marsh-mellows on a nice evening with the sun setting in the back ground.

30 feet is the norm. You will have to have a permit, so you might as well call the city.

I'm sure the city/town hall would give you the information you need for that. Each town might be different.
