I don't believe there are any disadvantages. The advantages would be relieving stress or blue balls, helping to be able to concentrate, etc.

it depends. if your a girl there are studies that say that even infant and fetal girls masturbate but you could possibly injure yourself if your to hard on things down there. but the advantages for girls are that it feels good. As far as guys go if you do it to much you can cause a hormonal problem *ie acne or even cysts *had a friend that had a real problem with mastubating and developed cysts on his nipples. but he did it 6 or 7 times a day* but on the plus side it can help you gain control and increase your stamina *ie getting your self to the point where you would orgasm and making yourself stop* but it also lets you get to know yourself better. *this is true for females and males* everything in moderation i say. its something natural that shouldn't be something your ashamed of its your body. But as far as the moral reprocutions go that totally up to your upbringing and religous background. For example my family has always said that there is nothing shameful of masturbation its just something you should keep to yourself. Don't be afraid of your own body. hope this was the kinda answer you were looking for :)

It is good to release tension, pressure, and even just to feel good about yourself.
Mastrubation has been shown to help "clean out" the prostrate.
However, mastrubation can be addictive and furthermore, mastrubation when combined with pornography, can desensitize you to healthy relationships with real people.

Connection between ejaculation frequency and prostate health
http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/4961.html
QUESTION:
I have been coming across articles on the connection between masturbation, ejaculation, and overall health. I was very surprised about this article from the Cancer Council Victoria in Australia . It was a study that confirmed that ejaculation frequency is important for a healthy prostate. The protective effect was most significant in men in their twenties who ejaculated on average 7 or more times per week. It compared this against same-age men who ejaculated less than 3 times per week. I made a New Year's resolution to pay attention to my body and to ejaculate at least once a day. I feel much better for it and my penis strength and sexual urge has increased immensely. I feel balanced. After a year, I can't imagine going back to my old repressed frequency and probably couldn?t keep from cumming for a whole day if I tried now. Why aren?t people made aware of this need? After getting used to daily +, I often have the urge to do it even more, but hold back. Are there any physical problems with over ejaculating?
ANSWER:
What a fabulous New Year’s resolution to pay attention to your body! Your efforts are worth applauding, as being in tune with yourself and your new masturbation schedule seems to have paid off, as you note that you feel “balanced” and “much better for it.” Happily, no physical problems are associated with over-ejaculating, so don’t worry about giving in to the natural urge to enjoy and pleasure yourself more often. You clearly have a strong awareness of the positive effects of masturbation on your body, so go ahead and experiment with masturbation frequency – in this way, you can determine what frequency feels best for you and your regular routine.
You also ask why people aren’t made aware of the “need” to masturbate often. Good question – especially in light of the study’s findings that frequent ejaculation helps reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Unfortunately, self-stimulation – as with most sexual acts – is often viewed as shameful, dirty, immoral, and all sorts of other negative adjectives. Wouldn’t it be great if masturbation could be seen as the healthy, enjoyable, and beneficial activity it really is, openly talked about and (gasp!) endorsed? Perhaps one day it will be – with more people like you who are open-minded and bold enough to talk about it in a positive light.
Enjoy – and pass that article along to friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, and anybody and everybody else!

MASTURBATION MYTHS:
from http://www.jackinworld.com/library/myths.html
Chances are, of all the things you've heard about masturbation, most of them were absolutely false. For some reason, misinformation surrounds masturbation like virtually no other topic. How do you spot a masturbation myth? One simple method is to ask yourself if the statement is also true of sexual intercourse. When you're masturbating, your body only knows it's getting sexually stimulated; it doesn't know by what means. So, for instance, if the question is whether or not masturbation causes acne, think of it this way: If it did, intercourse would also cause acne. In fact, neither masturbation nor intercourse cause acne.
MYTH:
Masturbation causes hair to grow on your palms.
FACT:
How many people with hair on their palms have you seen?
MYTH:
Masturbation causes hair loss, chronic fatigue, and other problems.
FACT:
Internet scam artists have tried to invent a concept called "overmasturbation," insisting that you have to buy their expensive herbal pills in order to counteract the effect of masturbating more than a couple of times per week. But the pills have absolutely no effect — and masturbating once or twice a day will not make your hair fall out, or cause anything else they claim.
MYTH:
Masturbation is bad for your eyesight.
FACT:
Masturbation does not affect eyesight. This myth probably originated because boys often start having to wear glasses at about the same age they start masturbating.
MYTH:
Masturbation causes your penis to stop growing (or) to get bigger.
FACT:
Masturbation has no effect on penis size whatsoever.
MYTH:
Masturbation causes your testicles to shrink.
FACT:
Absolutely false! It is true that if you're highly aroused, your testicles become engorged with blood and may appear slightly larger and heavier, and that masturbating will make them revert to normal. But they will absolutely not be any smaller than after the last time you masturbated.
MYTH:
Masturbation causes acne.
FACT:
It doesn't cause acne. Like the eyesight myth, this is a case of two things that happen at the same time, even though one doesn't cause the other.
MYTH:
Masturbation causes sexually transmitted diseases.
FACT:
Hello? "Sexually transmitted" means from one person to another. You can't give yourself a sexually transmitted disease!
MYTH:
If you masturbate too much, you'll run out of semen and become sterile.
FACT:
Semen is a fully renewable resource. When you ejaculate semen, your body simply makes more — the same way your body makes more saliva after you spit.
MYTH:
People can tell whether you masturbate by how your penis looks.
FACT:
Masturbation does not change the appearance of your penis. (It does tend to cause an erection, but that usually goes away when you're finished.)

Masturbation Frequency:
http://www.jackinworld.com/misc/faqtree1.html#mastfreq
How often does the average male masturbate?
It depends on a lot of factors, the most important being age. For an 18-year-old male, a rough average is once a day or so. This is slightly higher for younger teenagers — maybe 10 or 12 times a week, and slightly lower for older people. You might be surprised by how often adult men masturbate — even happily married men.
I think I'm addicted to masturbation. Is that possible?
It is, although many, many people think they're addicted when they're really just doing what comes naturally. For more on this topic, read the article Is Masturbation Addictive?(http://www.jackinworld.com/library/articles/addict.html).
How can I masturbate less often, or quit altogether?
It's tough; it takes a lot of will power. It can be done, especially if you're driven by very strong religious feelings. However, JackinWorld's position is that it's not worth it. We think you should enjoy the harmless pleasures your body can provide.
