Flow cytometers are computer-driven instruments which analyse cells moving in a fluid stream past a laser. Some flow cytometers have the additional capacity to sort cells, that is, to physically remove cells with certain defined characteristics from the fluid stream, and put them into a separate container. So, the short answer to your question is - all cell sorters are flow cytometers, but not all flow cytometers are cell sorters.
