I know betting nil is betting 0 and tricks mean how many books can you make if you are talking about spades.

NIl = 0, as in a nil bid means one expects to take 0 tricks. Tricks are individual plays or books within a hand.
These terms are common in Hearts, Spades, Rummy and Bridge.

Betting nil means you think that you wont take any points/tricks during that hand. Tricks are when your card beats all the other cards played and you collect the cards into your pile.
