babies are supposed to be placed on their backs to sleep until they are of the age that they can find their own way of sleeping...it's supposed to reduce the risk of SIDS.

Obviously there's already alot of people that have already told you babies should always sleep on their backs until they're old enough to roll over onto their stomaches by themselves, I just wanted to say something about babies choking while sleeping on their backs, this is what I was told by my doctor: All babies have the natural reflex to turn their head to the side whenever they spit anything up, therefore they will not choke on anything they spit up, and by the time this reflex is gone they will be old enough to sleep however they want anyways.
I was always worried about my son choking in his sleep as well, but he's been sleeping on his back everynight since he was born, and he's perfectly fine, never choked, but he also has only spit-up a couple of times in his bassinet, when he was really little.

I have been a daycare provider for 20 years (plus I have 4 kids of my own, ages 27, 25, 22, and 9). I keep up with the latest recommendations about infant sleep. Currently, unless an infant has a medical reason against it, babies should be put to sleep on their backs. Even babies who are able to roll over and prefer to sleep on their tummies should be laid down on their backs to begin with. When my older 3 were babies, you hardly ever put a baby on his back because of the believed risk of choking, but apparently that has been proven wrong and the "Back to Sleep" campaign promotes a decreased risk of SIDS for infants who sleep on their backs.

In my experience with babies for the past 16yrs now you should always put the baby on their side. Proped up on both sides with their own small blankets rolled up.(one in front on belly and one in back) They also have wedges made for such a position. This way if they happen to throw up in the night, they will not choke on it(on their back) and they will not suffocate in it(on their belly)
Also, putting an infant on their backs all the time to sleep can cause them to get a flat head. "a marked increase in cases of positional plagiocephaly, a condition usually resolved by time and Mother Nature. It occurs when babies sleep exclusively on their backs and have consistent pressure on their soft, forming skulls. As a result, they develop flat spots on their heads. " For this reason also I still stand by putting infants on their sides for sleep is best and safest. It's worked for this many years, why mess with it now?
Hope this helps and good luck! Congrats on your new bundle of joy!

When I was in the hospital after having my first baby, I actually witnessed my newborn choking on mucus while laying on his back. He was gasping for air, trying to breathe, yet in the process, sucking the mucus back down into his windpipe. I leapt across my bed to roll him on his side, and once I did that, he was fine. Therefore, I am not a fan of putting babies on their backs because I personally witnessed what COULD happen. I have had two babies and they both have slept on their stomachs with their heads to the side. I tried getting them to sleep on their sides with the little foam gadget that helps them stay on their sides, but they both HATED it. So...it's been stomachs for them, and they've been fine. I'm sure I'll get some thumbs down for my unpopular answer, but I can't help what I saw with my own eyes, and the experience I've had with putting my babies on their stomachs, and they've been ok. Please read everyones' stories & recommendations and decide for yourself.

Babies should be put to sleep on thier backs, until they are able to roll over by their self. they dhould also be put with thier feet to the foot of the cot/moses basket to stop them wriggling down and under thier covers. When baby is awake during the day the should be put on thier tummy for some of their play time to help thier development.

Babies are supposed to be put on their backs to prevent accidental suffocation and SIDS. They should only sleep on their stomach when they are able to roll completely over without effort (they are less likely to cause self-suffocation)

On their backs is the current method. And the newest from Pediatritions are to try to get them to sleep with a pacifier in their mouth, as studies have shown they are less likely to die of SIDS. Best of luck.

I've always placed mine on their backs never there stomachs. because of the risk of SIDS. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It's very important to lay your babies on their backs they are at a greater risk for SIDS if you don't.
