Is there a device that will connect the video out port of the laptop to the input port on a TV, so that I can use the TV as a monitor? Where can I get it?

Like another poster menitoned, your laptop should have an s-video out port on it. It looks a little like the PS/2 mouse or keyboard ports.

If your TV does not have an S-Video in port, then you can buy an RF converter at Walmart or Best Buy or wherever to hook it up. You will also need a cable to run the audio out from the headphone jack on the laptop to RCA-in on the TV or RF converter.

BTW - a normal TV does a lousy job as a monitor. The short version is that only 640X480 has any chance at all of being readable on a standard TV. Unless you have a newer LCD TV or HDTV.

You can do it for movies (like Divx) but it's really not worth the effort. If indeed you are trying to hook it up simply for video, its a lot easier to get a DVD player that plays Divx, Xvid, or other Mpeg-4 files.

Philips has a couple - the DVP642 or the DVP5960 (even better). The second one has a USB port that you plug an external hard drive into and watch video off of that. Both are under $70US.
